Project '69 part 4

I appreciate hearing from all the other racers about the interest in the buildup of this "Stocker". This month we are going to be showing a lot of the parts that have been arriving via a little brown truck just about every day.

In the the first photo we see just a few of the MR. GASKET items that we received. After racing a 455 Olds engine for many years I have counted on MR. GASKET for all my gasket needs. Usually all we've ever needed was there ULTRA SEAL GASKETS and they would solve all of our header and valve cover leaks. In this photo we see the quadrajet #56C gasket, the 1/4" thick base gasket # 759, the #5820 intake gasket, the #5901 ULTRA SEAL header gasket, the # 5880 ULTRA SEAL oil pan gasket, and the #5860 ULTRA SEAL valve cover gasket. We have been using MR. GASKET gaskets since 1967.

In photo #2 we see a few other MR. GASKET items, the #1099 quick change timing cover for all those cam changes driver Tony Goodman has planned. 2 sets of # 1957 valve stems for our WELD wheels, we are planning on running 2 different sets of slicks. Also show is #2661 chrome water neck, #1515 chrome fuel block off, #9800 chrome valve covers, and #5270 master cylinder chrome cover. I know the chrome goodies won't make it any faster, but it does look better.

In photo 3 we see my favorite set of wires, ACCEL # 7001, I think they are the best money can buy. These are racing wires with the added protection of the ACCEL Pro-Sleeving with heat shrink tubing to provide the tops in protection. These are designed to got underneath the headers, they also make them to go over the valve cover. They also make the same wire without the Pro-Sleeve. Also shown is ACCEL spark plug # 8170. This works out great as my Olds 455's take the same plug.. We are going to experiment with heat ranges and gaps and we will let you know what we find out. Any advice? Please send it our way.

In Photo 4 we see our complete ignition, I saw this at the PRI show and had to have one. The main box is #667S, It is the HYFIRE VIIS- Sportsman ignition. It has 2 seperate RPM limiters, a single stage retard, automatic start retard, dual microprocessors, and no chips are needed. The coil is Mallory, the fuel system is all Mallory Series 140 and regulator # 4207. Along with the Series 140 Mallory fuel filter. We also purchased a spare fuel filter refill to carry in the trailer.

Photo 5 shows the rear wheels by Weld Racing Wheels. These are the latest from Weld. They are called the Magnum. These are 10 inches wide with 5.5 backspacing. The tires we use are M/T 9" wide with a 29.5" diameter. With the 5.13 gears, we should really wind this small block up pretty tight. These wheels are the coolest we've seen. They are just as shinny on the inside as the outside, stop by in the pits and check them out.

Photo 6 shows the hottest battery on the market today, they are not only hot in drag racing, but they are the hottest thing in NASCAR Winston Cup racing also. These are available at ThermoDynamic Inc. They can be reached at 1-800-646-3378. This battery weighs only 31 pounds and has 800 Cold Cranking Amps. Most other batteries weigh 8 to12 pounds more. This is the same battery the Military uses in the Stealth bomber and the B2 Bomber. It is shipped to you fully charged and ready for use. It can be deep cycled hundreds of times. Also available is that cool looking and NHRA and IHRA legal aluminum billet battery mount.

Photo 7 shows the latest fan from Scotts Fans. We have Scotts fans in all four of our race cars and after 12 seasons in the red car, it still performs perfectly. Scotts can be reached at 661-295-9340. They will actually build one exactly for your need. We use the 16" Puller fan with the Terminator motor. This comes with some great 14 gauge disconnects so its easy for a cam swap. This company also makes all kinds of fans for your tow vehicle also. Please give them a call when you need a fan, they are a great company.

Photo 8 shows out project stocker's cylinder heads, we thought we'd have a pro look them over and install some new valve springs. We picked up the "trick" valve springs from Competion Products in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We heard about this springs from a fellow stocker racer who has given us plenty of good advice, so we quickly ordered #2300E springs. And they can be reached at 920-233-2023. Tell them we sent you. The cylinder heads and valves we given the once over, by Winston Cup Pole winning engine builder, Don Terrill. Don moved back to Kalamazoo, Michigan after a few years at SABCO racing in NASCAR country. Don has also built the Number 1 qualifier at the US Nationals in Stock in 1994. We appreciate all he has done for us. He can be reached at 616 345-1411. Don't call him unless you are serious.

Photo 9 shows the coolest set up for an alternator. Powermaster is on all my race cars, with alternators and starters. In fact we designed the Oldsmobile starter together. It took us three tries, but now with the Oldsmobile/Pontiac starter you don't have to worry about the starter hitting the header, or the wires touching the headers as the starter is right next to the block instead of 3 to 4 inches away. Back to the alternator, Powermaster is also the standard product for NASCAR Winston Cup, so you know it has to be good. Powermaster makes a great kit to bolt up to your Chevy. It is #8-881. Comes complete with brackets and 100 Amp alternator. We also ordered # 981, a kit to install the alternator in your 67-69 Camaro's. This spaces the crank pulley and bracket away from the crossmembers. This is another great company, run by a real nice family. The Bennetts are first class. Powermaster can be reached at 865-688-5953.

Photo 10 is a little teaser, as you can see the small block going into our project 69 stocker. More next month.
